What a fun day at Rhode Island College, my alma mater Class of 1966 for my Bachelor of Science in Education/Art and 1972 for my Masters in Education and Art/ I actually have a life certificate to teach K-12. There was a big turnout for these events since this year it was a beautiful clear and sunny day. The Alumni community of students, families and children came to this weekend to have so much fun, There was continous music ,rock climbing, face painting, pumpkin painting, book sale, concerts, hayrides, photographs in historic costumes, and so much more. This was a very lively campus.
There were according to the RIC website 1000 who attended the barbeque.

This sidewalk painting was remarkably created by Michael Macaulay.

My younger son, Mark, attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and played a trumpet in their sensational marching band under the direction of an amazing so deeply admired and adored director, George Nathan Parks. This rehearsal video was taped in Michigan after they left Ohio and had heard the devastating news that after the Ohio rehearsal, their leader had unexpectedly died of a heart attack after he left the field and went to his room.

As you watch and listened to this band, the Pride and Class of New England, you see the emotional reaction to these members and their tears of sadness. These 2 songs were well-known at all their half time productions, the GO UMass GO and the "My way"

During their halftime performance of the Umass and the University of Michigan football game in Ann Arbor on September 18, 2010 the UMMB gave tribute to the memory of George N. Parks.

Serving as band director for 33 years he managed to get the best out of his students. He will leave behind a legacy that will be tough to ever be matched again. Many of the students will have a hard time moving on without him. It is so unfortunate that George N. Parks had to pass so young, only 57 years young.

Our rocky beginnings has built a strong foundation for us to build our marriage of 41 years STRONG today June 28, 2010.

WHAT A WAY TO SPEND A HONEYMOON EVENING...

It had been a most wonderful memorable extremely hot 90 degrees Saturday, that June 28, 1969. The 11:00am wedding mass was at St Francis Xavier Church in East Providence with Father Rego and Father Diogo officiating. Following taking pictures at Slater Park in Pawtucket, RI, we gathered family and friends to the Falstaff Restaurant in Seekonk, Ma.

We were scheduled to leave the Warwick Greene Airport on American Airlines at 7:00pm for a flight to New York city to meet the Franconia Cunard line ship to go to Bermuda for our honeymoon. At about 9pm were were still flying in the air actually flying in circles. and hovering over New York city Laguardia Airport. We told the crew that the ship was leaving at 10:30pm and we were going to miss their departure if we did not land soon. they allowed us to talk ship to shore with the Captain of the liner. He told us that he could wait until 11pm, the latest, so he would not disrupt his schedule. Our luggage was red tagged, so we would be the first to get off and a cab would be waiting to take us to the pier.

We held our breaths and prayed for a safe landing in time to meet this time frame, HOWEVER this was not going to happen... this was during the time the air traffic congestion was occurring.

Our American Airline could not get a clear for landing from the traffic controller, there were just too many plane in the air all waiting to land and they each had to wait their turn. As the time progressed to 10pm than 10:15, we knew we were staying in New York and not leaving with our ship to Bermuda.

When we eventually landed at 11:25pm we went to the American Airline office to request a solution to this situation. there I was in my purple going away outfit with hat and corsage sitting on my Samsonite luggage waiting for my new husband to return and tell me everything was all right. It was past midnight now and "what a way to spend our first night together married, our Honeymoon evening.

Resolution was that American Airline would fly us on Monday, June 30th to meet the ship docked in Bermuda. they agreed to put us up at the Lexington Hotel in NY City for Sunday, now June 29th , my birthday.

All in all it wasn't so bad. We spent our honeymoon in New York City and Bermuda; A strange occurrence though, my wedding announcement stated that we would be going to Bermuda with a short stay in New York,

Easter was a time of getting a new bonnet, a new dress and new Buster Brown patent-leather white shoes. I would dress up and Mommy and Daddy would take me to St Francis Xavier Church and then after church we would go to Roger Williams Park to take photos.
After the Park we visited my Mommy's brother , Uncle Manny and Aunt Rose Medeiros and have dinner and take more pictures. We did this annually as a family event.
This was taken in their back yard (1954) I was 10 and my brother was six At sixteen I still loved dressing up for Easter, going to church and visiting family. I continued this as a family Easter tradition to my own family once I was married and had children.
My two sons, Mark Alan at three and John Michael at five with the Easter Bunny.
May you enjoy your family on this special day that we remember "He's alive - He has Risen.

As I waited for the final countdown 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2

at midnight in Times Square, New York City with Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest. I realized that I had been doing this for so many years, waiting for the big apple to inch down or now the huge 12 ft crystal ball to the last second to 1 and then "HAPPY NEW YEAR." As a child when my parents would go partying my younger brother and I would stay in my Nana and VooVoo's apartment next door and watch the New Year come in. They would give us some huge pots and cooking spoons and said when the apple drops to the Happy New Year you can bang these as loud as you like. What memories and fun. After we would have a light snack and milk and go to bed.

Today is the day begin as day, January 1, 2010 This was the day we would have dinner at my grandparents and watch the Pasadena Tournament of Rose Parade. My cousins and I would play games like, Monopoly or Sorry while our fathers and Uncles would sit in front of the TV and watch all the football games. They would smoke their pipes, or cigars and have their brandy in hand. The Rose Bowl, there was the Orange Bowl in Florida, the Cotton Bowl in Texas and the Sugar Bowl in Louisiana. Our mothers and Aunts would sit around the kitchen table and share stories of the past years and share recipes and craft ideas, some would bring their knitting and crocheting to do while they chatted. Those would great days of fabulous memories. Do I miss my family ancestors. It is so sad to have a huge family dwindle down to only a few.

My wishes to all of you as you begin this new year that you have an abundance of joy, happiness, love, good health and success in all your endeavors, dream big and make a change in the lives of the ones you love and the people you engage with in person or on line with all the social medias available . Make a difference in their lives, put a smile on their faces and provide them with hope make a difference one person at a time. Let their be peace on earth for all men and woman and children. Meet my sweet daughter-in-law who married my first born son, John Michael on May 20, 2000. She is holding my second grandson, Braydon Pierce born April 20, 2006.Vicky is battling a disease called Sjogren's that was misdiagnosed when she gave birth to her first child in August 2004
and it has caused her now End Stage Renal Disease from complications of her Sjogren’s.

Meet her loving husband of 9 years, my son, John Michael, and their 2 toddlers, my grandsons, Nolan Bryce going to be five on August 6. 2009 and Braydon Pierce who just turned three. Below is a photo taken at Mrytle Beach.

My daughter-in-law, Vicky has a guardian angel from Canada. She is absolutely speechless, and so am I. Check this out! This loving and caring Canadian has a heart of gold. She found my tweet for the blog I wrote at Active Rain requesting re-blogs to help find Vicky a kidney donor. She had send messages throughout her Twitter and Facebook followers. She also has blogged on her blogs about this fundraiser she instituted for Vicky's cause.

WHAT AN UNEXPECTED EVENTOur 40th Wedding Anniversary, was celebrated with family and friends at a surprise party on Saturday, June 28, 2009 at Chelos. My two sons, Mark Alan and John Michael and my sister, Maureen planned this party that was a tremendous success. I thought I was going out to dinner with my husband and sons and never expected this most wonderful surprise.

This past weekend was a weekend of surprises, My firstborn son , John Michael who has been living in Anderson, SC since 1997 came home unexpectedly to his father and me on Friday, June 27th. He said it had been twelve years since he had spend time with us for our anniversary and my birthday, since these were especially milestones in our life, this 28th of June his Dad and I celebrated 40 years of happiness. Like all marriages we have had our disagreements, the making up is always fun.

SPCA shelter, this beagle,whose name was Buddy, born MARCH 27, 2003
An appropriate name might have been CHANCE, becaue we gave him a
second chance to live a happy canine life with humans who would love him
so much that he would become faithful and learn to trust and obey.
Buddy was 13 months old when we adopted him and badly abused
with a personality of aggressiveness. TODAY 5 years later, Buddy is the most lovable sweetest furry canine companion that anyone would love to own and love. We are so happy to have given him a love he so deserved.

He moved on to his home in heaven on June 10, 1986 at the age of 64. It was an untimely death and most unexpected.

June 10, 1986 my Dad died, it was just before the summer that he had promised to build a shed in our backyard with his grandson, our first born John Michael, who was 14 at the time. He said they would have it built before he and his brother would leave in August for Camp Yawgoog Heartbroken by the loss of his grandpa, he insisted that he wanted to fulfill the plans that they had. So at the age of 14, our son, John Michael built a free-standing shingled wooden 12ft by 12ft shed on a cement slab in our rear yard with no carpentry training except for assisting and watching his grandfather in the past. This project was scheduled to be built during 1986 summer vacation with his grandfather, however because his grandfather (my father) passed away unexpectedly on that day in June, John Michael planned to complete this project by himself. Saddened by this John Michael told his father and me that he would still build this shed. This shed was built with so much love that we felt that his grandfather was with him giving him the knowledge and ability to complete this project. These internal carpentry genes come from his grandfather, Edmund Joseph Pacheco and his great-grandfather, Manuel R. Pacheco, who were professional carpenters their entire lives. In the early years they worked as Pacheco and Son, building many houses. Later when Manuel died, Edmund continued working as a carpenter building and repairing Almacs supermarkets on salary rather than maintaining his own business.

Another project John completed at an early age was re-doing the basement of our church as an Eagle Scout project.

Another major project he did along side his dad (who also was not trained in carpentry) was to gut out the front and partial sides of a building we purchased to become our real estate office.

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, established in 2004 by the Gemma Family in memory of their mom, Gloria Gemma who died from breast cancer, hosted the 3rd Annual Flames of Hope…"A Celebration of Life" at WaterFire on Saturday, October 11, 2008 in downtown Providence, RI.We were watching our 2 grandsons from South Carolina, during this event so we decided to take them to see the waterfire and the procession of lights.The festivities began at 5:30 PM at the RI State House with the enormously uplifting Flames of Hope Torch Parade and the lighting of the RI State House in Pink to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We waited in line for the procession to start. The boys were so patient as we were early to get a great viewing spot up front.

As the people went by we felt their inspiration and their hope in the people and the crowd. The survivors were wearing pink ribbons.There were so many woman, a few men and a few children, all ages.
The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation relies completely on donations and fundraising to fulfill their mission of raising breast cancer awareness, increasing breast health education, and generating funding for critical breast health programs. Their promise is that 100% of the net proceeds will remain in the local community.

The following memory I shall never forget, it has been embedded in my mind forever..

As I still hear the words:
"Don't be alarmed "Everything is fine" The boys are in their beds asleep, but I know you want to know why I am here."

Actually as we drove up our street that was what I was thinking, when I saw the Mom of our sitter.
We left the children with Debbie her teenage daughter because her sister Donna who was our regular sister and older had to go to an after-school activitity and she would not be back by 6:30 the time we had to go on our listing appointment in town less than 5 minutes away.
Before we left we said to John Michael, 3 years old, a very bright child.
"Mommy and Daddy need to go to your friend Faustos's house to talk with his parents on business and we will be back really soon. Be good and listen to Debbie, Donna's sister and play with your trucks. Debbie is going to watch you and Mark"
He understood we hugged and left, no crying he went to his Tonka trucks and was fine.
SO we thought.........

We asked what happened? Why are you here?

Debbie called me all upset. She said "I was changing Mark and I had left John Michael sitting by the sliders playing with his trucks. I told him I'll be right back that I was going to go and change his brother's diaper.
He shook his head yes.
When I came back to the kitchen He was gone, I went outside and called him, He didn't seem to be around.

Debbie said you left at 6:25 and would be back by 8:00 It was 7:15 when I arrived. I told her we need to call the police. As I was about to call, there was at your front screen door 2 teens and there was John Michael smiling that he had been on quite an exciting adventure.
I opened the door and he ran to Debbie and said,
"Look what I have!"
In his little hand he was holding a nickel.
We asked what had happened.
He said, "I went to see Mommy and Daddy. I knew where I was going. I know Fausto's house behind Bellows."
The girls then spoke and said that is what he said when we saw him walking alone on River Road near Bellow's Funeral Parlor.
We asked him where he lived. He said he knew but would not tell us. So we took the coin out of our pocket and said," Will you show us where you live if we give you this shiny coin?"
"Yes, so we held his hand and here we are right to the door. "

Unbelievable!!

As my DH and I thought about this incident hours later, we couldn't imagine how he went by so many neighbor's houses and no one saw this little one walking along by himself.
We lived at the top of a hill. His journey took him down the hill past 4 houses, then a left on to Holiday Drive, he walked past another 24 houses 12 on each side to the main road, River Road.
There he went past more houses, an elementary school that he would be going to, and the cars on the street.
It was in front of Bellows , 2 blocks further from the school that the teens saw him and approached him and brought him home.
Anyone could have picked him up. We thanked God so much for this not happening and placing these 2 friendly teens at the right moment to meet John Michael. "Praise the Lord"

Last week we went to Circuit City to see what sales they were having since they were going out of business and saw that they had 2 Flip Ultra cameras at 30% (retails for $149.99) Great deal, I actually purchased mine (pink one) for just under $100. I had been reading about the great reviews it was getting and how easy it was to use. My son decided we should each buy one, since we both love blogging and social networking on
facebook and
twitter and Active Rain

This Flip Ultra is a mini uncomplicated camcorder, simple to shoot and fits in my pocket. It does not need chargers just 2 AA batteries. It captures sharp vivid videos up close or far away. The best is it has a USB connection, plug it in without any wires. I Love my new tech toy.

The first video I wanted to capture was my Catholic church I have been attending since 1972. It is St Jude's in Lincoln, Rhode Island. It is in walking distance from my home and now after all these years since it was founded in 1946 it is getting a complete renovation, I cannot wait to see the new improved church, which should be done by April 2009. Enjoy!

The Catholic church my family and I have been attending since 1972 has been Saint Jude's Church at 301 Front Street, Lincoln, Rhode Island 02865 at the corner of River Road and Front Street Route 126. It was founded in 1946 St. Jude was one of the twelve Apostles. Mark’s (3:18) and Matthew’s (10:3) gospels refer to him as Thaddeus (a surname meaning “amiable or “loving”)

Nothing is impossible with God

When faced with a difficult situation many people pray to St Jude, he has been known as the "apostle for the impossible."

I have many great memories attending and being active with this church community, I was lector for many years as the boys were growing up and my first-born John Michael was Altar server. We actually were scheduled to do the same Mass. I was on the Parish council for several years and taught CCD. The pastor I had for many years was Father George Behan who has since retired On the front door there is a sign posted that tells parishioners and guests that this church is not being used until April 2009.The church is being totally renovated. I was only 23 and John was 28

My special memory fell on this date , February 11, 1967
It was the night that I met a most wonderful young man who later became my dear husband of 40 years this coming June 28th, 2009. I was a 5th teacher at Meadowcrest Elementary School in East Providence, RI. After a week of work and children some teachers would get together and go out on the town.
This particular night I really did not feel like going dancing and socializing so I told my fellow teacher friend, Angie, that I was going to pass. She begged me to please go just for a few hours because she had met a young man, Carney, the previous week that she liked but did not want to go alone and wanted to see him again. Being a good friend I said all right and we got in her '66 yellow Volkwagon beetle and headed to the Grist Mill in Seekonk, Ma And the rest is history.....

ROGER WILLIAMS

Roger Williams (December 21, 1603–April 1, 1683) overlooks the Providence downtown City
from his final burial ground in Prospect Terrace Park , a park located on Congdon Street in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island.

The park, founded in 1867, has a statue of the theologian Roger Williams which was built in the late 1935-1939, after Williams' descendant "Stephen Randall made a deed of gift for the monument. This 35-foot stone statue commemorates Roger Williams' founding of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and his promotion for religious freedom. The stature depicts Roger Williams gazing over the city."

In 1939, Roger William's remains were moved into a tomb that lies directly beneath the statue. His body had been overgrown by the roots of an apple tree next to his original grave.

Roger Williams returned to England in July 1643 to obtain a Charter for his colony to forestall the attempt of neighboring colonies taking over Providence. He returned with a Charter for "the Providence Plantations in Narragansett Bay" which incorporated Providence, Newport and Portsmouth.
Roger Williams was Governor of the Colony 1654 through 1658. During the later years of his life, he saw almost all of Providence burned during King Philip's War, 1675-1676. He lived to see Providence rebuilt. Roger Williams died in Providence between 16 January and 16 Apri1683/84, his wife Mary (Barnard) had died in 1676. They were parents of six children, MARY, MERCY,FREEBORN, PROVIDENCE, DANIEL,and JOSEPH, all born in America.

Roger Williams envisioned, and ordained in his settlement at Providence the reality of separation of church and state which the United States of America has maintained.

My love and passion for art has never ceased from my heart. I always yearn to create. Those who know me or have been following me know that I was an art instructor for the Central Junior High School in East Providence in the late 60's early 70's. As an Art major attending Syracuse University and Rhode Island College I concentrated in the fine arts, design and ceramics.The style periods that inspired and influenced me was Impressionism and Cubism. Cubism was a 20th century avant-garde art movement, pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, that revolutionized European painting and sculpture. To keep my talent alive I heard about the Rhode School of Design Museum having what they called GALLERY NIGHT. The Gallery Night Providence is a free, fun-filled introduction to Providence’s exciting art scene! On the third Thursday of the month, from March 19 through November, nineteen of the city’s hot “art spots”

open their doors inviting you to a visual arts party. You travel at no charge via the Art Bus, which loops continuously to more than a dozen art galleries and museums.I joined their drop-in workshop For Adults Only, with admission being absolutely free for a free art lesson held 5:30-8pm, where I would receive one-on-one instruction from a professional artist/educator. Materials are provided and no experience is necessary.
With a little bit social and a lot of fun, I attended several workshops on Gallery Night. During the 2007 season I attended 5 out of 9 Thursdays. At the end of that 2007 season the professional artists and their staff selected from all of our art pieces for an adult showing. They selected one of mine that they liked which was my mixed media drawing, titled "CHOICE" This created a wonderful memory for me, having my work being displayed in their museum Gallery Exhibition room.

My piece has hidden words, similar to what Picasso and Braque would do in their pieces. Can you find

CHANCE and CHOICE? The media I used was charcoal, magic markers, pencils and cut-out construction paper. Being an abstract you can actually display this in any 4 positions. They have it displayed in a different position. I prefer this way.This museum has excellent examples of the French Impressionist and Post- Impressionist schools by such artists as Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. There is important work by 19th-century French sculptors Auguste Rodin, Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, Jules Dalou, and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.
Among the 20th-century European painters in the collection are Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Fernand Léger, and Oskar Kokoschka.

Eventually I will post some of my other pieces. I do plan on scheduling time for myself to attend more Thursday Gallery Night workshops.

How I long for the good weather days........
During these severe winter snow days (our 4th snowstorm, today 2-3-09 and it is still still snowing tonight) I long for the great outdoors for some fresh air and things to do at our Slater Park, Pawtucket, RI, which rests on the Ten Mile River that borders Pawtucket and Seekonk, Ma.

This park is beautiful and very well kept and clean for a city park. My first home was an apartment at 80 Ashburne Street which was in walking distance to this great place. When the days were beautiful, warm but not steamy hot, I would take the baby carriage out and take my firstborn son, John Michael to this park.

When we moved to Lincoln in '72 we still made many trips to this park and especially when our boys were young they just loved to visit the animals at the zoo and to especially see Fanny the
elephant and feed her peanuts.

They loved as they grew older to ride the carousel by Charles I.D. Looff. This Slater Park Carousel in Pawtucket (1894) This Carousel is said to be the fastest of the Looff carousels, another one is in Riverside, RI where there used to be a fabulous amusement park called Crescent Park.

When my husband and I got married in '69 were had our wedding party photos taken by the gazebo at the front entrance in the Marconi Gardens. There is not a time during any season that we do not mind visiting this special park. We like to have picnics by the Slater Park Band Stand and boathouse terrace watching the ducks and sometimes a swan gravefully swim by.This was the one of the special places we took our Grandsons to last Oct '08 when we watched them for a few days and re-visited the playground when their parents returned from their friend's wedding in NH.
Slater Park will always have a place in my heart for all the memories, a great Place to bring the Family.

1-29-09 Wednesday Memory Walk

I woke up this morning to 6 more inches of fresh snow thus adding to 38 inches accumulation thus far, I decided to make this Wednesday memories of my past winters, when snow was FUN!
The boys loved the snow and I did, too. We lived on the top of a rather steep hill so the enjoyment of fresh snow was to get the sleds out and go down the hill. We had a red plastic toboggan-type sled that I would get on with Mark and go down.
Here Mark Alan is 2 and John Michael is 4. The winter of the 78 blizzard the state was actually shut down and we were told to not try to take any vehicle out. So we walked everywhere, to the stores and had so much fun talking with our neighbors amd making new friends.

Notice the Big wheel John Michael wanted to drive it in the snow, but it was too difficult. The sleds were better.

Great Road Historic District

at the intersection of Breakneck Hill Road.

This Historic Great Road is in walking distance from my home, about 30 minutes and near the Lincoln Woods State Park.

Along this famous Great Road in my hometown of Lincoln, RI, appears this gorgeous unique fieldstone two-1/2 story 10-room home mansion with 10 fireplaces built in 1810 built by Stephen Hopkins Smith.

The Hearthside, is considered to be one of the "finest examples of early nineteenth century Federal-style houses in Rhode Island. It is located at 677 Great Road (Rt. 123), (Great Road Historic District) at the intersection of Breakneck Hill Road.
Legend has it that Smith built this house to impress a young lady from Providence with winnings from a Louisiana State Lottery, which he kept a secret from her. Upon completion of the house Smith took the young lady for a ride to see this beautiful house, which she commented to him, "Why anyone would want to live in the wilderness!" As a result of her rejection, he never married. In 1996 the town became the owners of this site, and Hearthside has become the backdrop to many public and private social events.

Interesting things about Me, that you may not know: 1. I drank turpentine when I was younger while painting a paint by number painting. I thought it was my ginger ale. (I had 2 cups side by side) I have always loved to sketch, draw, paint and be creative.

2. I always wanted to be a girl scout, but my parents said they didn't have extra money for clubs and extra-curricular activities. I wanted to play a flute and be in the marching band. Still was told I couldn't.

3. I was crowned the Holy Ghost Queen when I was a teenager. I marched in a procession "Feast of the Holy Ghost in Cranston, RI, where my parents and Godparents were members of the Cranston Portuguese Club. This feast is a Catholic celebration that proclaims the faith of the Portuguese and their devotion to the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity.

4. Growing up I was very involved with the Sister of St Dorothy and I wanted to become a nun. this ambition changed when I attended college to become a teacher. I always wanted to be a mother and have children.

5. I love to dance, always have and always will. Growing up I would go with my Godmother Hilda to Phillip Street Portuguese Club where we would dance chamaritas and polkas all night. I actually met my DH at a dance club at the Grist Mill in Seekonk, Ma.

6. I attended Syracuse Univerity during the mid 60's when there were racial riots. We actually had to keep our Lawrinson Hall Dorm building locked at all times and were told never to walk alone. I swam in the Onodaga Lake. One of my close friends was from Quebec.

7.I love sunsets along the ocean on a warm evening. Packing a lunch to go and sit on a blanket on the beach or in the park with my Hubby is relaxing and peaceful and inexpensive.

8. Getting high for me is getting a discount and a super deal. I love shopping but will never pay retail. I always hate to spend money I am a saver, not a spender.

9. I have become a computer geek. I love technology and the amazing tools at my finger tips. I blog and enjoy selling Avon and items on eBay. How did I ever graduate from college with my Smith Corona typewriter?

10. My family is my life. I love my grandsons, my children, my Buddy.

I am a very sentimental, emotional, romantic person who loves people and life. I am a servant that believes in helping people.

Wednesday Memory

It all began with me saying to my DH after visiting my sick Uncle Joe,
“Let go over to the Rhode Island SPCA shelter around the corner at 186 Amaral Street and see what medium-size dogs they have.
"Perhaps they have a Brittany spaniel or a beagle!"
These were my 2 favorites breeds, I even had pictures on my frig from a dog calendar, with one of each. When we went in, the receptionist asked what we were looking for.
"I don't think you have what we want!.
“We are looking for a Brittany Spaniel or a beagle."
“We normally don't get those special breeds, however just an hour ago
a 13-month-old beagle was brought into us”.
"Wow," I couldn’t believe what she had said.
”You can see him, but the vet needs to give him his shots an run a complete
evaluation of tests., so you will need to return”
We went down the hall and saw many dogs that needed to be adopted and in the last stall on the end sat this aggressive little beagle. My DH and I looked at each other in agreement and said we would return tomorrow and would like to adopt him.
He came with the name Buddy and was born March 27, 2003 (the birthday of my deceased Dad) This had to be meant to be, what a coincidence.

The following day we returned and put the collar on our new pet. He was very hyper and we put him in our car to take him home. We had signed the papers and given our donation.
We were told that he had been badly abused and was in need of a lot of love to build a trust.
We felt we could do this after all; we had 2 shepherds for many years while our sons were growing up.

During the first 24 hours we felt we had made a big mistake and decided to return him to the shelter. We felt his behavior was beyond our ability to train and control and he nipped my husband that he needed a tetanus shot.
When we return him, the vet said he would have to quarantine him for 2 weeks.
During the two-week period neither my husband nor I mentioned Buddy.
On the 10th day we were in a store and we sort of went our separate ways, I ended up
in the pet dept and found a shampoo with a beagle on it. I went to John and said'
"Does this remind you of someone?"
"Are you thinking of Buddy?
"Yes, Maybe we made a too hasty decision to return him
My husband said in his excited expression.,
“I have been back to the shelter to see Buddy 3 times and they said
we can still have him again.”
"Let’s do it”
We went back to the shelter it was now, April 15, 2004
We gave our second donation and told the vet we were going to get him trained and
give him our love and build trust and loyalty. The vet said," take this cage it might help you in his training."
“Dr. if we did not come back for Buddy. what would have happened?”
"Due to his personality not being suitable for a family with young children, we would have had to put him to sleep."
"OMG"
We knew this was going to work, it had to, in order to save his life.
The first six months was the most difficult, we did get him training at Petsmart.
This did help to teach him the basic command, Sit - Lay – Come - Down
We allowed him to keep what he had grabbed, mostly socks and never tried to take it from him.
We were always very cautious getting close to him, since he would growl, show his
teeth and want to snap at us. I have to admit these were very trying times, but my husband, son and I endured with a few minor nips
As the weeks went by and now years this aggressive beagle with all his emotional baggage did a complete 360-degree turnabout. He has become so genteel, patient, loveable, and obedient friend to all of us. You would never have realized that he had had such an a bad behavior. Now when he has found a sock or grabs something he should not have, all we have to say is “Come, leave it “ and Buddy obeys.
He is so smart.
When his 2 ceramic bowls of water are empty, he crouches down and whimpers
for more water, if he feels if we do not hear him he clangs the bowls together.
He gives us no trouble putting on his rain gear to go out, but he does his job and comes right back in, He does not like the rain. He does love the car. We say we are going out or he sees us put on our coats he runs to the door. He loves to play fetch and put his head on our laps or rest his head on our table. Usually a sign of boredom and asking to go out or play.

Buddy now allows us to touch him and he becomes so affection, and gives us kisses. He performs his dancing jig when he hears one of us coming in and rushes to greet.
His favorite place is the armrest of our couch, If he is sleeping he opens his eyes and his tail wags and wags when one of us enters.
He sleeps mostly in the hallway between our bedrooms or in my son’s room. He used to love to sleep in our bed and snuggle up to my husband, or me, but due to my asthma being trigger by his hairs, we moved him out.
I love him so much that my doctor says, if he doesn’t leave, you will need to control your Asthma with medication. I take Singulair and Serevent.
Buddy travels with us and we enjoy him so much that he has become our world
We are so happy that he is a part of our family

My world revolves around the life of my beagle, Buddy, born on my deceased father's birthday, March 27, 2003.

It all began the day in April 2004 that we went to the the Rhode Island SPCA shelter and met this abused beagle that needed love and affection and a family he could trust.

Why does it seem only like yesterday.

I had just finished my 5th year teaching while carry this first child. I never told anyone I was pregnant because in the early 70's I would have to leave teaching. So I used safety pins to keep my skirts and pants up and wore many large tops and sweaters. Many of my fellow teachers would remark how I was putting on weight. I would smile and say, "I just love to eat."

When the day would arrive I would have to make a decision to return to teaching or be a SAHM.

The day arrived 5 days early, my due date was August 6th. It was a warm Sunday morning and I awoke at 8am and I went to the bathroom and I had a showing, I called my Mom and told her, She said, "Go to the hosptial now", My DH called the number for my gynecologist, Dr Alvin Dirkin from Dirkin and Gendron and told the answering service that he was taking me in now. They told him this was my first child and I had plenty of time.He said "we want to be safe, her mother delivered her sister in the car on the way to the hospital."

We left for the hospital exactly at 8:15am and arrived at 8:30
I remember saying "Dear Lord, Please let Christopher John or Sherri Lynn come quickly"There were no test in the early 70's to deterninine the sex of the child. It did happen so quickly not even enough time to prep me. Our firstborn baby arrived exactly that Sunday morning, August 1, 1971at 9:30am (ONE HOUR!!)

JOHN MICHAEL CORBETT

7 pounds 11 ozs 19 inches

"WOW" I said I will have at least 5 more babies, this was a cinch."My first born child, was A BEAUTIFUL BOY, with lots of red hair and a strong cry. He was placed beside me and I was amazed that this beautiful little human being that my DH and I created with God's blessing. I was at St Joseph's Hosptal in Providence, RI. I had a private room which was possible with my teacher's insurance and my husband insurance. It allowed me to privately adore my little one. I wore a pink peignoir set, with fine lace and frills, "after all my GYN told me I was definitely having a little girl."
As a Corbett ritual I call John Michael every year on his birthday no matter where he is at 9:30am and we sing him "Happy Birthday.

As you can read he was named John after his father. We felt Christopher would be such a difficult long name to learn for school and the past 3 generations of Corbetts the first name was John and the middle named changed.

His father is John William, his Grandfather John Henry, his great grandfather, John Robert

Twenty-seven months later along came his sibling and our second, son Mark Alan. I was going to Rhode Island college, working on my Masters in Education. I actually carried this baby in June of 1973 to receive my degree. It was Friday, November 9th about 5:30 and I was getting sharp pangs. I felt I should check it out and headed to St Joseph's hospital in Providence. I was admitted because they felt I was ready to deliver as they timed me. I was prepped and went to the delivery room at 7:30 and left the delivery room at 8pm with no child. I was told that the activity has ceased and it was as if the baby went to sleep. I was told to remain in the hospital but it was okay for my husband to return home until tomorrow. My DH went home to be with our 27mo son and said he would be back tomorrow morning or sooner if the Doctor called.I remember having a night of little activity, no labor pains until the next morning. Mark Alan was delivered at 10:30am. I was actuallyinduced for the delivery to come quickly.

Saturday, November 10, 1973 at 10:30am MARK ALAN CORBETT was born.

7 pounds 9 oz 21 inches

As a Corbett ritual I call MARK ALAN every year on his birthday no matter where he is at 10:30am and we sing him "Happy Birthday."

A favorite place my hubby and I love to go to is to

Oakland Beach

in Warwick, RI.

"This would be a great place to take our 2 toddler grandsons from SC" while we watched them for few days this past October while their Mommy and Daddy went to New Hampshire for a wedding, that my son was to be a groomsman.

The boys were given new experiences like eating doughboys from the famous Gus's (Iggys) since 1950's. Growing up this was my family trip practically every other weekend. There used to be a carousel and a carnival midway that was so much fun as well as the beach to swim.

They also tried clam cakes and chowder. After eating we walked the bike bath and came close to seagulls eating and then had fun collecting seashells. Finally they enjoyed the playground made to look like a ship.

Wednesday Walk down Memory Lane 1982

A phone message I shall never forget..

I arrived home about sevenish, hungry and completely exhausted. I had just made about 25 deliveries to my Avon customers. I had been delivering so many orders for the past week. Many orders from all my customers trying to help me compete with a Avon contest and win. Grand prize was 8 days in Hawaii, second prize was a weekend in New York City, theater and dinner. I felt I would definitely win the NY trip. My sales were well over $1500.00. My DH said you received a call from Trudy (my manager) and she wants you to call her as soon as you get in.

I became so excited

"Did she tell you I won the NY weekend?

She told me to have you call. I immediately dialed her number. Trudy answered.

"Hello Trudy, this is Kathleen, I am so excited you're going to tell me I won the weekend trip. She said NO"

"No, BUT I worked so hard and you are telling me I didn't win the trip to NY"

That's right" You did not win the trip to New York City

HOWEVER, YOU WON THE 8 DAYS TO HAWAII."

I was shocked, speechless and began filling up with such emotion I cried.

My DH asked, "Why are you crying?"

"I won the trip to Hawaii. I cannot believe what has happened"

The trip was from December 11- December 19, 1982 " A trip I shall never forget.

I made this Mask at First Night when I volunteered for the craft center at the Providence Convention Center a few years ago. I volunteered for this Dec 31st but was unable to attend. We were hit with a snowstorm and the conditions were hazardous to drive to Providence. I re-dated this mask to 2009.
On this Tuesday I wish all of you a Healthy Prosperous NEW YEAR filled with success, life, hugs. energy, laughter, wisdom, and if you are an entrepreneur, MANY LEADS.

Claiborne Pell, who served as our U.S. Senator from Rhode Island from 1961 to 1997, has died. One of his greatest achievements was in 1980 when he helped tens of millions of Americans attend college with his Pell Grants.

Thank you Sen Pell for all that you’ve done for Rhode Island and for this country.

You helped both my sons with your grants so they could attend college.

Our first heavy snow storm 12-19-08 "White Christmas"

But will it last for Christmas?

On Friday, December 19th,2008 we got our first heavy snowstorm. It was so beautiful with its pristine fresh pure whiteness and the tree covered branches. It started about 2:30pm and it came down thick and fast and furiously; in no time the roads became hazardous to drive because of poor visibility.

We were in Warwick shopping when we decided we better head home, what normally would take 20 minutes took us 50 minutes. By Saturday, with the continued snow the compilation for northern Rhode Island and Lincoln where we live was approx 12 -15 inches deep.

My husband tried to get the snowblower to start but as you can imagine it did not run and we needed to shovel to get out. The main roads were decent but not clear to the asphalt.

" We thought this would last and we would have a White Christmas" Unfortunataely this major storm a week before Christmas did not last.The temperature rose to high 50's and 60 degrees and it rained and washed all the snow away. 21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Always Christmas morning 7-ish and the tradition of going to midnight mass at the cathedral in Providence

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Rudeness in stores, pushing shoving and the dis-courteous drivers with parking spots

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? handmade from my sons over the years when they were in school and ornaments collected on trips

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Turkey and ham at my sister, Maureen and brothert-in-law, Carl's house (tradition)

A favorite place of ours to enjoy the Narragansett Bay and have a Iggy famous dough boy is Iggys at Oakland Beach in Warwick, RI. We decided to take the boys there to enjoy this treat and clam cakes and chowder and fish and chips. Nolan loved everything but Braydon only wanted the fries with ketchup and he did like the dough boy. I brought along their sippy drinks as well as gold fish, raisins and crackers.
They enjoyed the nautical theme playground and watching the seagulls swoop in for food and collecting shells to take home. Nolan wanted me to reassure him that there were no crabs. This was an exhausing day for all of us.

After having breakfast on their new Alphabet placemats. We dressed and went to Toy R Us for a Thomas the Train celebration. We arrived at the location in the store and sat to wait for the storyteller, Sandra to arrive. When she arrived she gave the children crayons, cards and Thomas the Train and all his friends pictures to color. She told the children to sit on the mat and play with the trains.

FYI:

For those who do not know, our first born son, John Michael , relocated to Clemson, South Carolina in 1995 to attend Clemson University to work on his graduate studies.He was convinced by my now, daughter-in-law, Victoria Hann, while attending UMass in Amherst, MA that he could save much money by moving in with her family in Anderson, SC and going to Clemson. The decision was made and he left for SC. In our hearts we knew how much he would be missed but we also knew that once they were married and had children we would be very very far far away, actually 19 hours by car. They were married on May 20, 2000 and gave us our first grandson, Nolan Bryce on August 6, 2004 and our second grandson, Braydon Pierce on April 20, 2006. Due to the distance and finances we do not get to see them as often as we would have liked to,

SO what a wonderful time we had with these precious, active lovable boys when they arrived in RI on October 9, 2008 and stayed until October 15, 2008. We were asked to take care of them for 3 days while they went to New Hampshire to be in a wedding for a roommate from UMass, Doug Hanson.

OF COURSE, WITHOUT A DOUBT WE SAID "YES, YES, YES"

OUR HEARTS WERE FILLED WITH EXCITEMENT THAT WE COULD HAVE 3 DAYS OF QUALITY TIME WITH THE BOYS, SPENT TAKING THEM PLACES, PLAYING WITH THEM, LAUGHING AND LOVING THEM, SO PRICELESS.........

Since we accomplished so much in 3 days this post will consist of several additional posts and many photos, including the days when John Michael and Vicky returned from NH.

DAY ONE- Friday OCTOBER 10, 2008

We were heading to Slater Park in Pawtucket, RI (only 15 minutes from where we live in Lincoln, RI)The boys woke up early like 7:30am had breakfast on their new place mats of counting numbers with pictures, so we could have a breakfast with a number lesson. They loved playing and counting. They helped pack their backpacks with toys and raisins and goldfishes, few cars and their sippy drinks filled with water/apple juice(50-50).

Nolan especially loved the park amd playground, but Braydon wanted to just watch the children and his brother while he remained very close to GRANDMA.

There were animals to see in the petting zoo and Halloween decorations, both scary and beautiful, sculptures and pumpkins

Braydon didnot want to have his picture taken, SOMETIMES, this was a time he tried to hide his face.

What fun it is to attend a College Alumni Home Coming

Upon arrival we saw the festive autumn displays and the volunteer workers in their tee shirts.
The banners were hung and the campus looked like an Octoberfest.

Attended my annual Alumni Homecoming at Rhode Island College in Providence today with John. Mark and Buddy. "Boy" does 1966 and 1972 seem so long ago. I loved my college years I had 2 majors, Education and Art. As we arrived there were so many people and cars we parked near the new softball field behind the Library. There were tents set up along the mall area of the campus where there were sponsor booths and activities for the children and adults. This sign directed us to fabulous all you could eat barbeque feast. I picked up our complimentary alumni tickets and had our hands stamped so we could get our food. There were the standard hot dogs and hamburgers and vegi burgers (which was good) and all the trimmings and oreo cookies, Lorna Doones, chocolate chip, potato chips and plenty of cans of soda and bottles of water. Seconds and thirds allowed.

Mark and I had so much fun at the pumpkin painting table. We were given a pumpkin and told to have FUN.

As the time passed quickly, it was cleanup time and time to leave. What memories we created today and now we have 2 little pumpkins for my 2 lil pumpkins, Nolan and Braydon who will be arriving shortly to Rhode Island (October 9th) to stay with Grandma Kathleen, Poppy John, Uncle Mark and Buddy while their Mommy and Daddy go to New Hampshire for a Umass friend's wedding.

Just last week it was $3.61. Lets keep it getting lower.

Mary Kathyrn Medeiros Pacheco was born August 25, 1921, the daughter of the late Anna and Manuel R. Medeiros. She died on August 16, 2004 at the age of 82.

Happy 90th Birthday to a dear most wonderful Aunt and Godmother.

The theme was "Fairy Godmother", since Hilda Pacheco Leitao never had children she was always there to be a GODMOTHER for Baptism or Confirmation. She actually has 30 godchildren. She and my late Uncle Joe became my Baptismal Godparents after they were married on July 29, 1944. This was an ideal party theme. The favors were magic wands made of star-shaped sugar cookies, and there were necklaces made of sparkling glitter and large colorful butterflies fluttering under the tents.

We needed to find a believable reason to get her to her Godchild, Donna Jean's house in East Greenwich, RI

The plan would be that her neice, Lauren Bettencourt who now lives in Boston, Ma would come to East Providence to take Auntie Rea to a place to eat in South County area. While she was heading to the restaurant she would tell her that Donna Jean had called and asked her to stop by and pick up some journalism books she had from URI that Lauren could have, since that was her major, too.

When she arrived she wanted to wait in the car, but Donna Jean insisted that she come in for a minute. As she came through the garage to wait in the back by the beautiful view of the Greenwich Bay water, we were all waiting to say SURPRISE. Gathered for this event was her younger brother, Jimmy and her baby sister, Dudater, with their families and friends. Gathering for this occasion were many relatives, cousins, nieces , nephews, great nieces and nephews and their families and many many friends.
